Understanding Obama's Narcissistic Entitlement Syndrome

77

By jiberish

Another day, another party.

The actions of our president has many people scratching their heads. How is it that when our country is in crisis Obama goes golfing four times a week, parties, sometimes two and three times a week, vacations every month and plays basketball daily? Who is in the oval office running things? How is he so disconnected from the ordinary people who elected him?

The following will try to explain the sickness that is afflicting him which causes his disconnect and his actions.

Our president is afflicted with Narcissistic Entitlement Syndrome, or NES, which is a genuine personality disorder characterized by a pattern of grandiosity and self-importance, need for admiration, and lack of empathy.

The word narcissism originates from the character made famous by the Greek poet Ovid, where Narcissus fell in love with his own reflection.

People with NES overestimate their abilities and inflate their accomplishments, often boastful and pretentious, while underestimating and devaluing the achievements and accomplishments of others. They tend to fish for compliments (often with great charm), and abuse special privileges and squander extra resources.

The roots of the narcissistic are both developmental and genetic ego. It represents the part of the self that thinks it is "the greatest" and the "smartest," so smart that it can get away with things, especially fooling people with regard to its intent.. Further, the ego thinks of itself as so powerful that it thinks it can exercise a kind of control, theoretically available only to divine forces.

The narcissistic defense seeks to dominate every space in which it participates – both on individual and group levels. This force of narcissism is interested in, committed to, and obsessed with power and control, and it will sacrifice people and resources indiscriminately

Entitlement and narcissism are linked because the sense of entitlement most often has narcissistic undertones. These people see themselves as special, believe they should have whatever they want regardless of the feelings of others, and continually inflate themselves while putting others down.

Those with NES are generally preoccupied with fantasies of limitless brilliance, power, and success, they envision the environment around them as one where they should be the center of others' attention due to their achievements, often exenterated. They generally have not worked at a "real job” but, expect to be recognized as superior to others without a corresponding level of achievement. As a product of these fantasies, they will often show a very arrogant attitude.

They lack empathy and are unwilling (or unable) to identify with the needs or feelings of others, often viewing those around him as objects to be manipulated to be in service of his ultimate fantasies of power.

Finally those with NES require excessive admiration. They need constant approval from those around them.

Some of the Causes:

*An oversensitive temperament at birth.

*Overindulgence and overvaluation by parents.

*Valued by parents as a means to regulate their own self-esteem.

*Excessive admiration that is never balanced with realistic feedback.

*Unpredictable or unreliable care giving from parents.

*Severe emotional abuse in childhood.

*Being praised for perceived exceptional looks or talents by adults.

*Excessive praise for good behaviors or excessive criticism for poor behaviors in childhood

NES results from a person's belief that they are flawed in a way that makes them fundamentally unacceptable to others. Pathological narcissism can develop from an impairment in the quality of the person's relationship with their primary caregivers, usually their parents, in that the parents were unable to form a healthy, empathic attachment to them.

At first sight people often describe a narcissist as popular, having charisma, attractive, competent, warmth and humor.

They are addicted to being famous, it drives them. Being famous encompasses a few important functions: it endows the narcissist with power, provides him with a constant Source of Narcissistic Supply (admiration, adoration, approval, awe), and fulfils important Ego functions.

How to Help a Narcissist.

More and more mental health providers see young people on a regular basis who are absolutely certain their lives should be better than they are and someone else is to blame. But not only young people. This seems to be an intergenerational dysfunction.

If you want to help a narcissist, stop providing him with what he needs. Do not adore, admire, approve, applaud, or confirm anything that he does or says. Disagree with his views, belittle him, reduce him to size, compare him to others, tell him that he is not unique, criticize him, and make suggestions, offer help. In short, deprive him of that illusion which holds his personality together.

On an interpersonal level, responses and questions like, "that's interesting; could you explain that?; or, "I am not clear about that; would you please clarify (or elaborate)?; or, "it seems like there is a contradiction in your logic." All of these can generate positive results in terms of reducing the control of the narcissistic forces. Accountability skills are conditions that require narcissist to take responsibility for their intent or give up their position. Questions like the following are beneficial to bring about their accountability skills:

How did you come to your decision/position?

What factors influenced your decision?

Have you considered the possibility that you are contradicting yourself?

Have you considered that you have avoided considering some important factors?

Although this was meant to explain Obama’s personality, and the decisions, or lack of, that he makes on a daily basis, it says a lot about other people we have a difficult time understanding, for example: Nancy Pelosi, most everyone in Congress, and especial Liberals.

Well done. Awesome hub!

Obama needs help. But as McCain said during the Campaign, we don't have time for on-the-job training for him. Nor on-the-job experimenting with medication and therapy that he I'm sure will not accept anyway.

I hope I'm not being too harsh for your liking, but I think Obama needs to be ousted from his position, whether he's carried away babbling on a stretcher on the way to the psyche ward, or impeached by the citizens. (Do they make stretchers that'll fit Pelosi on there with him?? ha).

Jiberish, good to see you back in action. But I'm curious where you got the above highly dubious "facts."

Brenda, LOL, I know this is a serious issue and I don't mean to laugh, but you said it so eloquently. Thank you for stopping in.

Tom, the sad thing about Obama is that he really believes that he is doing a great job because he only confronts himself. He also believes that he, as president, is owed all the luxuries without the responsibilities .

Ralph, I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but those Facts are easily found by searching for his agenda, and by following MSNBC, who carries all his fun stuff. Maybe someone will write a Hub about the list of his daily agenda in chronicle order.

Jiberish, you are back in my life. I missed ya. Been playing with the grandkids again, yeah?

I think this describes him pretty well.

We do know that Obama for daily exercise plays basketball, which is nice that he stays in shape and has a distraction from the stress.

I listened to some tape of him on a casual experience. He and Biden both cannot keep their mouths shut. There are both motor mouths, and you can tell Obama loves to talk and be the center of it all.

Keep on hubbing!

Eovery, ok, so he plays basketball every day for excersize, let me give Ralph a list of event just this month:

Picnic for Congress, including Hot dogs & beer

Black Tie Bash for Mexican Pres Calderon

Paul McCartney Night

Missed D-Day on June 6th but went to the Ford Theater event.

He has played golf 32 times and missed 8 special events to play golf.and lets not forget..Martini wednesdays.

I knew he was a narcissist - but I didn't know about the whole NES thing. OH MY GOSH - that's him in a NUTSHELL!! jiberish - I definitely learned something from you here today - but it's not surprising - I often learn things from your Hubs! Great job!!

Jiberish, how about a comparison with President George W. Bush. My impression is that Obama has a much stronger traditional work ethic than George. Probably closer to Clinton than to Bush or Reagan who wasn't noted for keeping his nose to the grindstons.

Ralph, George Bush is no longer at the helm. As fas as Obama's work ethics, I would have to say he has none. Thanks for stopping in.

Hi jiberish. Excellent research. As I read through the "symptoms" you describe,I thought to myself, "Heck, doesn't this apply to EVERY president? Not to mention most members of Congress?" You've gotta be more than a little bit of a narcissist to run for public office at that level:-)>

jiberish profile image

jiberish Hub Author 23 months ago

Mighty Mom, you are correct, it applies to many on the hill. A little ego is beneficial, but when it's full blown Narcissism, a disconnect with reality happens. Thanks for visiting.

Imagine the liberal backlash if Bush was seen on a golf course after Katrina! The media is starting to wake up a bit...but Obama is still their creation so they won't put his feet to the fire for too long. Obama is making Jimmy Carter look more and more decent with each passing day. I love asking Obama supporters if they have any regrets for voting for Mr. Hopie Changie...most do not. Hurry up Nov 2, we need to save the country from this socialist Saul Alinsky loving pretend president.

Wayne Brown profile image

It sounds viable to me...plenty of the symptoms are in place. This might explain the logic of plunging headlong into shoving a healthcare plan down the throats of the American public. He is pumping up his ego and cares little or nothing for their dilemma. There is at least a bright spot here...he doesn't have a brother! If he did would be called "Billy Obama"? Thanks for a really good hub, Jib! WB

jiberish profile image

jiberish Hub Author 23 months ago

Todd, It wouldn't bother me so much even if he played golf every day, after all other presidents played golf, rode bikes, jogged etc. What bothers me that in lieu of taking care of business he goes golfing. He missed D-day ceremonies to go campaign for Boxer. As a president he has certain functions and duties which should take precedence, he should be attending functions which represent our country instead of just weekly martini bashes. Thanks for visiting.

jiberish profile image

jiberish Hub Author 23 months ago

Wayne, Brit Humme said it best when he said that 'Reagan was an actor who became president, and Obama is president who wants to be an actor. Just because he envisions grandioso changes does not mean that these changes are beneficial to a still 'free' country.'

jiberish~ What a great Hub! You nailed Obama to the narcissist personality wonderfully, and I must say many others in leadership rolls fit the description too..

I personally can't wait to vote him out..Wonder if the next President will blame him as much as he has blamed the previous President? Turn about is fair play!

jiberish profile image

jiberish Hub Author 23 months ago

Tina, besides his narcissism, he happens to also be a control freak. Think how many times he says "I'm President", he even said it yesterday; "Even though I'm president, I have limited abilities....I can't suck the oil out with a straw....." I think even our children will be blaming Obama.

Todd Zaino 23 months ago

Jiberish,

You are correct-he does deserve his golf time...but this does not pass the "smell test" IMHO. It just doesn't look right to have the POTUS out golfing when people in the Gulf have lost so much. He has to be the most dis-connected president ever.

I love how Obama tells us all to cut back, and be thrifty-yet he really loves to live high off of the hog. I hope that Obama realizes that being a former president is a license to print money and he bows (pun totally intended!) out and allows the adults to take over once again.

jiberish profile image

jiberish Hub Author 23 months ago

Todd, his behavior has just gotten out of hand. He does not have the class or the brains to be president. Makes me wonder if Obama got elected the same way Greene did. thanks for stopping in.

Todd Zaino 23 months ago

Jiberish,

Let me start by stating I cannot stand Hillary Clinton, that being said-I think that she would have been a better president than the clown with have now. I think after the November 2, 2010 bloodbath, old Hillary is going to quit her gig as SOS and make a primary run against the First Golfer. Teddy Kennedy did the samething in 1980 vs. a wildly unpopular Jimmy Carter. I don't know why I believe this...just I feel that Hill probably feels that the media fell in love with Bozo and "stole" the election right from underneath her. I wonder how many Obama voters wish that they could have their vote back?

Todd Zaino 23 months ago

The reviews of President Obama’s perfomance last night were not pretty…even the MSNBC gang jumped ugly on him…just like when LBJ said “That’s it. If I’ve lost Cronkite I’ve lost America.”

If Obama has lost MSNBC and Matthews and Olbermann…Obama in for a rough three years as a lame duck president.

Olbermann: “It was a great speech if you were on another planet for the last 57 days.”

Matthews compared Obama to Carter.

Olbermann: “Nothing specific at all was said.”

Matthews: “No direction.”

Howard Fineman: “He wasn’t specific enough.”

Olbermann: “I don’t think he aimed low, I don’t think he aimed at all. It’s startling.”

Howard Fineman: Obama should be acting like a “commander-in-chief.”

Matthews: Ludicrous that he keeps saying [Secretary of Energy] Chu has a Nobel prize. “I’ll barf if he does it one more time.”

Matthews: “A lot of meritocracy, a lot of blue ribbon talk.”

Matthews: “I don’t sense executive command.”

Ouch! I can’t believe that MSNBC has put down their Obama pom-poms and actually are calling this son of gun on something!

In today’s Rasmussen Reports…Obama’s Presidential Approval Index has hit an all-time low at 44%, well at least now people are starting to wake up from the Hope and Change fairy tale we were all told in the summer of 2008. He appears to be in way over his head, and his lack of executive experience is becoming quite evident.

Todd, 58 days into the Gulf oil spill, and he meets with BP execs for 20 minutes. Hardly enough time for a handshake. Finally MSNBC is getting the message, the lovefest is over.

jberish: As always a great hub. He has sunk himself and will soon realize his folly but will not understand it. I do not mean to correct you...The Manchurian Candidate is the movie coming out. The Manchurian President is the book which everyone in the US should read right before we boot him out. Scary is how we the people were deceived in allowing him to get in the oval office in the first place. Having once been married to a narcissist, I understand this totally and can only feel sorry for his wife. Of course she is reaping the goods in the house too, but I do not think she has it very easy. This type of personality tends to be extremely cruel when they don't get what they feel they should and yes, grandiose behavior, and telling a lot of lies is all part of this personality...one to stay away from for sure!!! You typed him perfectly....Great hub.

Brilliant hub on narcissistic behavior and the illustrious one. Sums up his actions with BP and the Gulf to a T. You really have a great discussion going here as well.

Todd Zaino 23 months ago

I suspect the main reason for the 20 minute meeting with BP was because he had a tee-time, and later wanted to shoot some hoops...priorities! If he continues to act this way-he just might be a lame duck president for his last two years. Jiberish-if you were up for re-election this Novemeber-would you want this guy in the same area code as you? Look at his track record. Barry's lack of executive experience and paper-thin resume are starting to catch up with him.

A perfect summation to be sure. A lot of politicians are like this. They enter for the jobs, for the power, not FROM experience, and not with any real intent to do any real work. And, as you rightfully pointed out, most of them never had REAL jobs to begin with.

Dick Morris the other day on the O'Reilly Factor said that part of Obama's problem is that he lacks management skills. "He's never been a manager." It's true. And he wasn't even a senator for very long either.

I think what we need to do in the future is look for someone who has the guts and the dibs to show that he can do the job that a president ultimately must do. I want to see NOT A POLITICIAN, but someone with credentials and a proven track record in whatever he's done.

It's the same thing when we take these kids out of college and somehow have this idea they are better than the other lot, we give them higher pay and a fancy title...

You have to have worked to understand how to lead workers.
