"So long as we have enough people in this country willing to fight for their rights, we'll be called a democracy." - ACLU Founder Roger Baldwin
The ACLU’s original mission is commendable, their fight for the first Amendment’s rights for freedom of speech, association and assembly; freedom of the press, and freedom of religion, is an American right. Equally is your right to protection against unlawful discrimination, due process and from unwarranted government intrusion into your personal and private affairs.
The ACLU works for the rights of people of color, women, lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender people; prisoners; and people with disabilities. They have eliminated desegregation in public schools, and even backed a student who lost his state-funded merit-based scholarship because he left college to serve a two-year church mission.
According to E-Week the ACLU opposes Obama proposal to reverse a ban to use tracking cookies on federal websites, the ACLU said the policy would allow the mass collection of personal information about every user of a federal government website.
They have fought against the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 from converting paper health records to an on-line data base, stating that by doing so it would allow our personal records to be sold. They want a more transparent government and believe that all government records should be made available to the public, including secret government documents.
When Obama apposed the protection of journalist from going to prison for refusing to reveal confidential sources, the ACLU stepped in on behalf of the journalist. In a statement, Comrade Anthony D. Romero, ACLU executive director, said: "Obama ran on a platform of change that would reform the abuse of state secrets, but Obama has reneged on that important civil liberties issues."
On the surface ACLU seems to be a conservative organization that stands up for the United States Constitution.
So why do so many still think the ACLU wants to undermine their freedom?
Could it be because the ACLU's founder Roger Baldwin said;
"I am for socialism, disarmament, and ultimately, for abolishing the state itself as an instrument of violence and compulsion. I seek social ownership of property, the abolition of the properties class, and sole control of those who produce wealth. Communism is the goal. It all sums up into one single purpose—the abolition of dog-eat-dog under which we live. I don't regret being part of the communist tactic. I knew what I was doing. I was not an innocent liberal. I wanted what the communists wanted and I traveled the United Front road to get it."
Could it be that the ACLU receives funding from George Soros’s Open Society Institute where PBS’s Bill Moyer is the former trustee? Or could it be that the ACLU sided with ACORN claiming they have a constitutional right to engage in its chosen form of voter fraud?
Could it be that the ACLU is for open boarders and encouraging illegal aliens to enter the US and remain here, helping them get drivers’ licenses, college tuitions, welfare and free health care? They opposed deportation saying that illegal immigrants were kept in "barbaric" conditions, kept in detention facilities for a 12 hour stretch, given no soap or paper so they could prepare legal documents? They stated that; "Some had not been able to shower, brush their teeth, or change their clothes in weeks.” posing the question; did these immigrants have these privileges while living in the desert illegally?
Could it be that the ACLU charged the Tennessee Christmas celebration having that a nativity scene as an ’illegal act‘, or while they condone making porn their view is that it isn’t a crime to own pornographic materials?
Could it be that while Obama was apologizing to the Muslims, the ACLU was spying on undercover CIA officers in Gitmo, and support Islamist jihadists who are trying to destroy our country?
Could it be that the ACLU calls for the elimination of 'In God We Trust' from our coins, stating that 'Under God' must also be torn from the Pledge of Allegiance, and the ’Commandments given Moses must never appear as public symbols under government auspices’?
The American Civil Liberties Union even discourages its own board members from publicly criticizing the organization’s policies and internal administration.
Could the fact that the ACLU is now trying to remove the Veterans’ Sunrise Cross in the Mojave Desert that serve as a memorial to the WW1 servicemen, and in recent years, sued to have religious symbols removed from the seals in Ohio, California, Nebraska, Missouri, and in Los Angeles just the threat of an ACLU lawsuit removed a cross from the county seal?
They yell and scream about TV anchors, radio stations, and even journalist because they dare to question Obama and his radical groupies in the administration, but fail to come to the aid of Beck, or Savage when their freedom of speech is endangered. It’s going to be interesting where they will stand on free speech now that Axelrod’s visit with Rupert Murdoch, last week failed at stopping the airing of the ‘Ugly’ within this administration.

Really great hub - thanks for the info.
Nice hub Jib. I question the unions all the times.
Keep on Hubbing!
Why are you spamming all the hubs with this comment?
"Hey check this out> a new hubber straight from Washington
Good hub. I have thought the ACLU outlived its usefulness a long time ago. They are now trampling on the rights of every day citizens who go to work, to church and try to raise their children in a dangerous world.
Great Hub jiberish,
I do admit the ACLU has done a few good things, but they totally lost me when they advocated allowing the Illinois Nazi Party to march through a Jewish neighborhood in Skokie.
Excellent hub! I have questioned the ACLU for a loooonnngggg time! And thanks for the comment on "Who is Olympia Snowe?"
This sounds crazy but, that is what's great about America!
Our system of checks and balances gets out of control sometimes. Freedom draws a very fine line. I agree, the ACLU has outlived is usefulness but do we replace it or reform it?
I think a reform is also a good idea. It is still useful...but seems to have gotten lost somewhere, same as the government. The ACLU has helped many people out of bad spots in the past, and still do. But what is bad....is VERY BAD...like the little girl with a curl in her hair. "When she was good, she was oooohhh so good. But when she was bad, she was oooohhh so bad!"
The ACLU, ACORN, UAW, TEAMSTERS all good examples of how organizations with the best of intentions can run completely amuck. They seem to start out as heroes and end up as racketeers.
LOL! I could care less, but that would require an effort they do not warrant. Nice Hub jib.
Jib... Good work, but I was not sure exactly what you mean when you pose a comment as a question..
Could it be that ACLU's founder Roger Baldwin said;
Was the statement about his Commie ideaology actually his?
If indeed he said that, it explains the ACLU lack of respect for Christians. I can see the ties to the likes of George Soros..
Thanks,,
Thanks for getting the truth out there. The truth be told, the ACLU has never been a praiseworthy organization. Have they done some good things?--sure. As long as they've been around, they are bound to do some good things, if nothing else, by accident. As a colleague of mine says, "even a stopped clock is right twice a day." Thanks again.
Thank you for the article Jibberish . I have always had a deep contempt for this Orginization .And I ran an ACLU Lawyer out of a drugstore when I confonted him with the cases they choose to take to court while making no secret to him how I felt about his Group! And I would do It again without hesitation . Can,t stand these guys !
I enjoyed reading this hub. You really hit the nail square on the head. I knew a little about the ACLU, but thanks to you I've learned a whole bunch more!
Wolves in sheep's clothing. Nice job Jib.
I like this hub.
This Hub is great! It is fair and balanced, not a polemic. I love it!
First, I'm tired of hearing a about the founder of the A.C.L.U. supporting socialism/communism. The ACLU was founded 90 years ago, before anyone realized what socialism/communism would become.
Second, arguing that child porn is protected speech is not equivalent to promoting or approving of it.
Third, protecting the rights of prisoners (illegal aliens or otherwise) is not promoting or encouraging open borders.
Finally, "Under God" was ADDED to the Pledge of Allegiance. The ACLU is for restoring it as it was originally.

Jiberish,
Once again a blockbuster hub. Once upon a time the ACLU did accomplish some great things, but that hasn't happened for a very long time. When a group such as this starts following and photographing CIA agents for the sole purpose of showing their faces to terrorists, I'm disgusted and done with them. They have outlived their purpose.
Jiberish, I noticed that you show a link to my hub on your hub. Thank you so much. I don't know how you did that , but I want to return the favor and do the same for you. I will try to figure it out.
